Meals on Wheels and Shopping Service

What is the service?

Our Meals on Wheels consists of freshly prepared nutritious meals delivered to your home by friendly, caring volunteers. Meals can be hot, chilled or frozen. Frozen meals can also be provided for weekends.

Good nutrition is an important factor to maintaining good health especially as we age. Is shopping a problem for you? Do you have difficulty preparing meals because of lack of mobility, difficulties with arms and hands? Do you find it difficult finding the energy or enthusiasm for food preparation? Let us ease the burden of constant meal preparation for you.

Who can receive this service?

Older people within the Lane Cove local government area who are temporarily or permanently unable to shop or cook for themselves. Most older people or any person living with a disability, and their carers and living at home are eligible to receive the service. A doctor's certificate is NOT required.

When is it available?

The meals are delivered Monday - Friday, between 10.45am and 14.00.

How does it operate?

A varied menu meeting cultural preferences and specific dietary needs including diabetic, vegetarian, low fat, gluten free and other categories.
Meals are well planned and consist of a hot or cold main, a soup, juice and dessert. The hot and chilled meals are prepared daily by a HACCP Accredited Community Centre kitchen.Clients may choose to have between one to seven meals per week. Extra food items are also available upon request.

Meal are delivered:
  • HOT - to have for lunch on the day of delivery,
  • CHILLED - to be heated and eaten within 24 hours of delivery,
  • FROZEN - your choice of meals, delivered weekly on Mondays through Fridays.

Do I have to pay to receive this service?

Meals are paid for by clients, however the charges are very economical. A set price is paid for the meal package with minimal extra charges for additional food items. Clients who may experience difficulty paying for their meals are welcome to discuss their concerns with the Coordinator.

How can I request this service?

Individuals, concerned relatives, friends, neighbours, and other service providers may request the service directly by phoning 9427 6425 or coming in to the office at 164 Longueville Road, Lane Cove.
We also receive referrals from G.P's, hospitals and other medical professionals. Two days notice to commence the service is requested.
