SOCIAL ACTIVITIES FOR SENIORS
Lane
Cove Community Aid Service provides a range of social activities for older
residents of Lane Cove. The activities are not normally provided on a Public
Holiday.

WALKING GROUP
The
group embarks on a variety of walks, encompassing local areas as well as those
further a field e.g. Lane Cove, Watsons Bay, or Parramatta, lasting from 3 - 4
hours depending on destination.
Who can receive this service?
Anyone who is reasonably fit and enjoys walking, and meeting people
with similar interests.
When is it available?
Walks operate between March and November each year, on a Monday
(unless a Public Holiday), commencing from the foyer of Lane Cove Community Aid
Service at 164 Longueville Road, at either 9.30am or 10.00am depending on the
destination, and conclude by 2pm.
How does it operate?
The Walking Group is managed by the participants.

Walkers need
to complete a registration form prior to joining the Group,

They need to
provide their own drinks, snacks, lunch (if applicable),

And
sometimes a Seniors Card for transport.

Cars are
required occasionally to help convey walkers to a central point to commence
a particular walk.
Do I have to pay to receive this service?
There are no costs for participation, except for a Christmas lunch
outing.
How can I request this service?

along on any scheduled walking day and registering;

you.

Walk venues
and starting times are advertised in the monthly Diary Dates and the Village
Observer.
COMMUNITY CAFÉ
Community Café lunch is available to all senior residents of the
Lane Cove local government area, who wish to enjoy the company and friendship of
other people whilst having a delicious two-course meal in Lane Cove.
Who can receive this service?
Any resident of the Lane Cove Council local government area, over
the age of 55 years. Community Café is open to all residents either living in
their own home, hostel, nursing home or with a carer.
When is it available?
Community Cafes are held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month
at the lovely La Zucca Restaurant on Longueville Road, Lane Cove. The start time
is 12 noon and you may leave whenever your socializing needs have been met. The
Café runs from February till early December. You need only call our centre and
book a place. Should you require transport, we will organise the Lower North
Shore Community Transport Service mini-bus to pick you up and drop you off or
one way should you wish.
How does it operate?
A generous main meal and dessert is provided, followed by tea or
coffee. Meals are served by volunteers who will attend to your needs. You will
join other diners and enjoy a chat with both them and the volunteers. Both men
and women are welcome.
Do I have to pay for this service?
A nominal fee of $10.50 is charged for the two-course meal. Should
transport be requested, a small fee is charged for either one way or return
trip, and is paid to the Coordinator.
How can I request this service?
Bookings are necessary, and can be made by phoning 9427 6425.
Bookings are taken right up to the day before the lunch however it would be
desirable to have bookings by the Thursday before the allocated Monday. Mini bus
bookings can be made at the same time.
BOOK CLUB
A cozy and convivial group of book lovers meet to discuss a variety
of novels, with very interesting and varied opinions put forth, followed by
afternoon tea.
Who can receive this service?
Any person over the age of 55 years interested in books and enjoys
sharing and receiving opinions and thoughts.
When is it available?
The Book Club meets on the 4th Monday of each month from 2.00pm
until 3.30pm at the downstairs meeting room of the Community Centre at 164
Longueville Road, Lane Cove.
How does it operate?
Books are chosen from a list provided by our supplier each year.
Each month a book from the list is read then discussed at the following month's
meeting, often with very lively discussion taking place. Novels vary in
subjects, and participants are encouraged to select the books for discussion.
The Social Activities Coordinator runs this group.
Do I have to pay for this service?
There is a small charge of $4.00 each meeting, which covers the
cost of hiring the books and for the afternoon tea.
How can I request this service?
Any interested book lover is welcome to attend. Just turn up if you
would like to join in, and you will be required to complete a registration form.
TEA AND TUNES
Tea and Tunes afternoons are held on the 1st Tuesday of each month.
This is an entertainment provided by a variety of artisits, ranging from
Hawaiian guitar, singalongs, dance groups, choirs etc. while enjoying afternoon
tea served by our wonderful volunteers. This is a great way to spend an
afternoon.
Who can receive this service?
Any resident of the Lane Cove local government area, over 55 years,
either living in their own home, hostel, nursing home or with a carer.
When is it available?
Tea and Tunes afternoons are held on the 1st Tuesday of each month,
commencing at 2 pm until approx. 3.30 pm. It is held at the Meeting Room
(downstairs) at the Community Centre at 164 Longueville Road, Lane Cove. We also
arrange Mini bus pick ups from the Lower North Shore Community Transport Service
at a small cost.
How does it operate?
Volunteers serve a refreshing afternoon tea to clients, followed by
the entertainment.
Do I have to pay to receive this service?
A charge of $5.00 is payable to cover the costs of the entertainers
and the afternoon tea. If transport is required, there is a further cost of
$4.00 return and $2.00 one way.
How can I request this service?
You are requested if possible to phone our office on 9427 6425 to
book for the afternoon, to allow for sufficient catering for the day. Bookings
for the transport can be requested at the same time.
BUS TRIPS
Both morning tea and lunch trips are scheduled, enabling those who
don't have the chance to get out and about, to visit some of the lovely areas
around Sydney whilst enjoying the company of others. Lunches can be fish 'n
chips, light meals at a nursery, or even BBQ's. We can arrange to pick you up
from your home or meet at the centre. All trips cater for both clients with
limited walking distance and those who enjoy a stroll while taking in their
surroundings. The trips are varied with the emphasis placed on the areas we
visit be stimulating, fun yet relaxing.
Who can receive this service?
Any Resident of Lane Cove local government area, over 55 years who
enjoys getting out for the day.
When is it available?
There is at least one bus trip scheduled each month. The trips are
advertised in the Lane Cove Community Aid Service monthly Diary Dates and the
Village Observer. Trips commence from 9:30am with pick-ups from home and vary
from 2 - 3 hours, depending on the outing, with drop-offs at home afterwards.
How does it operate?
The Coordinator and bus driver accompany the passengers on each
trip. Passenger names are given to the driver the day before each trip, and you
will be phoned advising the time of pick-up from your home.
Do I have to pay for this service?
Yes, we only charge an amount to cover the cost of the bus, morning
tea, and lunch if required. This changes depending on the nature of the outing.
Payment is usually made on the day of the outing, to the Coordinator.
How can I request this service?
Bookings are essential and can be made up till the day before the
outing however the earlier the better to ensure a place. It is rare that we can
not accommodate all our bookings. You will be requested to leave your name,
address and phone number when you call our office on 9427 6425. Should there be
a rare time that bookings out number our capability a waiting list is provided,
in case of cancellations.
MAH-JONG
An afternoon for Mah-Jong enthusiasts, followed by afternoon tea.
New players are always welcome to join in.
Who can receive this service?
Anyone interested in learning to play, or wishing to join others in
this fascinating game.
When is it available?
The group meets each Wednesday at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen
Mother Centenary Centre, 180 Longueville Road, Lane Cove (street level room).
Playing times are from 1.15pm until 4.00pm, and continue throughout the entire
year (apart from a very short break over Christmas.)
How does it operate?
This activity is organised by a dedicated group of volunteers, who
also provide the afternoon tea.
Do I have to pay to receive this service?
A payment of $5 each week to cover participation and afternoon tea.
How can I request this service?
We would appreciate a phone call to 9427 6425 if you are a new
player. Or, please feel free to just turn up and introduce yourself to the
organizers.
BRIDGE/ SOLO/ SCRABBLE/CHESS
Providing mental stimulation and social contact for interested
Bridge/ Solo/ Chess and Scrabble players. This is a social afternoon of light
hearted games. We welcome all new players, however if you wish to play bridge
you need to already know how to play.
Who can receive this service?
Any interested Bridge, Solo, Chess and Scrabble players, over the
age of 55 years.
When is it available?
Players meet each Thursday from 12.45pm - 3.30pm at the downstairs
Meeting Room, of the Community Centre at 164 Longueville Road, Lane Cove.
How does it operate?
Activities Coordinator will set up tables and supply afternoon tea
(approx. 2pm) for players and also enjoys challenging anyone in Scrabble.
Players stack the dishwasher after their refreshments.
Do I have to pay to receive this service?
A weekly fee of $4.00 per person covers the cost of afternoon tea,
and the provision of playing cards and pads etc.
Who can receive this service?
Interested Bridge or Solo players are requested to phone the Activities
Coordinator on 9427 6425 as groups of four are required. Scrabble and Chess need
only two or more players to enjoy a game so you are welcome to just turn up.
