Community Visitors Scheme
What is the Service?
This is a federally-funded program to improve the quality of life of older people living in aged care facilities (hostels or nursing homes), by matching a volunteer friendly visitor with the resident, to provide companionship and an opportunity to be part of our society.Who can receive this service?
Residents of aged care facilities who would like some extra social interaction through having a regular visitor.
Our service covers aged care facilities in the Lane Cove local government area.When is it available?
The actual visits are at times suitable to both the visitor and the resident of the aged care facility. It also provides an opportunity for people who are working to participate in a volunteer program.How does it operate?
Once a volunteer has been interviewed by the Coordinator, they are then matched with a resident. The Coordinator interviews the resident as well as the staff of the aged care facility, to assess the resident's suitability for this particular program.
The Coordinator then introduces the Visitor to the resident and also to the staff at the aged care facility. As this is a very personal program the matching process can take some time and this is discussed with the prospective Visitor at the time of interview.
A three monthly support meeting is held for Visitors. This meeting encourages Visitors to debrief if necessary, provides updated information to other volunteers, and also acts as a social forum for mutual encouragement and support.Do I have to pay to receive this service?

Referrals to the Community Visitors Scheme can come from a number of sources:
a) Staff at Nursing Homes and Hostels
b) Aged Care Assessment Teams
c) Family/friends who feel they need extra help in supporting their family member/friend.
